Educators demonstrate a broad knowledge base and an understanding of areas they teach.
Through my two final practicums, Ed. 490 & 491, I was required to teach and be formally observed in all 9 subject areas; Math, Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts, Languages, ADST, Fine Art, Physical Education, and Career Education. It goes without saying that some subjects I found much easier to teach and create lessons around based on my own strengths and life experiences, but as such there are also some subjects that proved to be more of a challenge. Personally, I have always loved and been drawn to the subjects of ELA, Social Studies, PE, and Fine Art. Subsequently, though, my knowledge of the subjects such as Math, Science, and Languages proved to be in need of some refreshing. However, I was well aware of the areas in which I needed to focus more of my energy in order to create teaching and learning experiences that best supported my students. Therefore, throughout my BEd learning journey I have continuously been working toward broadening my understanding of these subjects and participating in many professional learning opportunities. It has been an extensive and enlightening walk down memory lane as I am reminded of years of Science concepts such as physical geography, biology, and chemical reactions as well as Mathematic topics of algebra, long division, and fractions! I believe that it is very important to be as educated as one can in order to best educate others. It is for this reason that I take my own education so seriously and am committed to furthering my knowledge and understanding to best support my students. Although I think that there is always room to learn more, I do feel very confident in my knowledge and understanding in the areas I teach.
